morning routines?

While in Switzerland we had this nice morning routine where Zach went to work a bit on the later side, and so most mornings would watch D to give me time to take a shower, get dressed, and have a quick breakfast before heading out the door.

Since moving back to California, Zach's adopted a different work schedule where he leaves the house around 6:45am every morning and then comes home by 5-5:30pm. D tends to wake up sometime between 5:30-7:30am, but it varies daily, so even if I had it in me to wake up earlier than absolutely necessary so I could shower and get dressed before D wakes, I can't plan for when that should be (would hate to wake up at 5am only to have him sleep till 7am, and I know once I'm up I won't try to sleep any longer). I guess that's what nap times are for, and I will then get ready while he's taking his morning nap, but he doesn't exactly take long naps and there's always so much to do with the teensy bits of free time I do get. I guess I need to try things like letting him play in his crib with some toys while I shower every morning, and just hope he stays happy long enough for me to do so. Anyone have tips or advice on dealing with the mornings?

Speaking of free time, or my lack thereof, I am woefully behind on my magazines, and I haven't even started getting Parents yet. I've also got a stack of books I'm wanting to get through. I guess I'll have christmas break back at home in two weeks, where I'll get more free time...

  1. I always bring Audrey to the bathroom
with me since newborn for shower. She complains a bit more now - but if I sing and if she gets some toys to play with, she is happy (she is sitting on the baby rocker thing strap in). It usually last 7-8 mins but enough for me to get ready.

  2. I used to put Dana in her exersaucer right outside the bathroom door. The way I see it, even if they do get unhappy, their safety is all that really matters. I usually shower before Dana gets up. Sometimes I'll even wait until I hear her in the morning. At her first sound, I jump in the shower and she usually stays playing in her crib until I get out 15 minutes later.

  3. Get the grandparents on a video Skype call. Seriously. Yesterday it worked for 30 minutes! Got a whole bunch of stuff done!

  4. The other ladies beat me to it. I was going to suggest bringing Donovan into the bathroom too. I do like Global Librarians suggestion too. I never had that option when my kids were little as skype didn't exist.

  5. The skype idea is interesting (I already know he adores watching video of himself) but I couldn't leave him unsupervised to do that. I guess if I put the computer next to his crib so he can watch from there and be entertained? I don't have anything else that confines him well like that.

Same thing with bringing him into the bathroom-- if I can stay right on top of him (say, putting on makeup) that works fine, but if I need to take a shower? Even if I brought him into the tub with me he'd probably be pulling down the shower curtain and trying to climb over the side of the tub...

  6. I've started putting my little one in her crib while I shower. She usually plays and doesn't get too worked up until I'm out of the shower and dressed and then I move her into the bath or hallway while I do hair/make-up, etc.

  7. I had a high chair with wheels and would wheel that into the bathroom. Or maybe a stroller?

  8. I used to put E in a seat in the bathroom. Now she hates being restrained so I am beat. I try to shower before bed if I am lucky!
